Headmistress's Welcome

Our greatest desire is to see our children grow up to lead fulfilled lives, enjoy healthy lifestyles and make a positive contribution to the wider world. At St George’s we want nothing less.

St George’s is a non-selective day and boarding school. We pride ourselves on providing a caring and supportive environment where each individual is encouraged to flourish; learning and knowledge are valued, and where staff and students take genuine pride in membership of their school community – we certainly try to “Aim Higher” in all that we do.

Founded on, and very much living our lives through, Christian principles, relationships between pupils and all who work and live here are a real pleasure to be part of and experience. Combining traditional values and inspiring teaching, students get an excellent foundation on which to build. These are revealed in the personal qualities that our students exhibit on a daily basis such as respect, service and endeavour, alongside intellectual curiosity and academic rigour.

St George’s has an enviable academic reputation, being consistently placed in the top 5% of schools nationally. Officially listed as one of Britain’s outstanding schools by Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector, we recognise that a good education is not just about outstanding examination results but a thorough preparation for life; it is about providing opportunities and experiences for all young people to find their talents and interests, develop good character, become accomplished and achieve across a range of disciplines and ultimately develop the confidence to go and make their mark in the world.

Everything we do is designed to make this possible for your child.

Our pastoral system is based on a House system. This “family within a family” approach ensures that all students are known and cared for. The Inter-house competitions ensure that healthy competition is nurtured, participation is encouraged and fierce loyalties are developed.

We are hugely proud to be celebrating our 110th anniversary in 2017 and to have remained true to that original principle of offering a free, first-class education to both to local children and to a thriving boarding community.

We want St George’s to be recognised as one of the most respected and admired schools in the world, not just for our achievements but the calibre of young people we develop and the difference they make to the lives of others.
