Army Cadet Force

St George's School is fortunate to have the Harpenden School Detachment located on its site. We parade on a Monday and Wednesday from 1915 to 2130hrs. We are open to children aged from 12 (Year 8) to 18 yrs of age who are from Harpenden and the surrounding areas. Come along and give it a go!!

2Lt Harmer is the Detachment Commander and works at St George's as the Operations & Facilities Manager and can be contacted on sharmer@stgeorges.herts.sch.uk (01582 716222) for any enquiries in relation to joining the detachment.

The following are a few of the subjects that we teach:

Drill and Turnout – How to march, turn and salute etc. How to iron, wash and care for their uniform.

Navigation – Care of a map, signs and symbols, grid references, navigation using a map to compass.

Fieldcraft – Personal hygiene and care in the field, building shelters, camouflage, concealment, sleeping out and survival skills.

Skill at Arms – Weapons training on the Air Rifle and the Cadet SA80 (L98A2)

Expedition – Country code, building a team, load carrying, food and cooking, maintaining a camp site.

First Aid – Heart start, CPR, treating bleeds, breaks and burns, dealing with shock, all covered and certified by First Aid qualified instructors.

Military Knowledge – Cadets History, Military History, Regimental History.

Cadet in the Community – Citizenship talk, local community events, bag packing, litter picking, poppy selling and supporting numerous charities.

Physical training – General fitness, push ups, sit ups, running, sprints, agility.

Shooting – Air Rifle, Cadet SA80, target shooting.

Adventurous Training – Rock climbing, kayaking, caving, mountain biking, scuba diving and more…

Military Band – If your child plays a musical instrument then we have a band they can join.

Sports – Many sports including swimming, football, rugby played at local, regional and national levels.

Duke of Edinburgh's Award – at bronze, silver, gold levels which is subsidised by the MOD.

CVQ – Cadets Vocational Qualification including BTEC, City & Guilds etc.
