ST GEORGES VA SCHOOL

MEDIA RELEASE

MONDAY 23rd JANUARY 2012

CREATURE COMFORTS

ALL WIRED UP TO SCULPTURE

EXPERIMENTS WITH CREATIVITY FOR 14 YEAR OLDS

FROM AADVARKS TO UNICORNS

All Year 9 students at Harpenden’s St George’s school spent a day experimenting with Sculpture as term got under way in January.

Over 180 students worked with artist and innovator Darcy Turner to make ‘creatures’ from specially provided sculpture wire. Having had demonstrations on the principles of size and proportion of animal bodies, individual students made creatures for display – from aardvarks to unicorns.

Shaping the wire to body parts and attaching them together with tape was a real challenge as students worked in small teams to create their own animals. The School’s Old Gym was littered with students as many moulded the wires around their legs and arms.

Head of Art Rory Browne was delighted with the enthusiasm of the Year Group who showed initiative and creativity. “It is a good way to introduce all students to sculpture which we cannot do in the normal curriculum time we have, and for a number of years we have had a Sculpture Day to enjoy the inspiration of Darcy who really captures their imagination.”

Headmaster Norman Hoare commented – “It is a most unusual scene when the students are making their creatures. It’s a kind of cross between aerobics and body art, and the outcome is literally quite fantastic. Some students are really caught up by this wonderful experience and in a few years major in sculpture in their GCSEs and A level pieces. They really do get ‘ all wired up’.”
