The Development Office first started in the school in 2003 when the Headmaster, Norman Hoare, began to plan the celebration of our centenary with an appeal that would leave a permanent legacy to the school.  This was the Sports Hall and Modern Foreign Languages block which was opened by HRH The Princess Royal in 2009.

In the summer of 2010, the Headmaster with a group of parents raised in excess of £65,000 in just over 6 weeks to enable the school to re-site and update the Sixth Form Centre and move the Music Department to Old Goddard House. In the Sixth Form Centre these funds enabled us to create a study area equipped with 52 computers, a new servery, social centre and coffee bar and office facilities. We also funded a music area for the 21st Century which included two new large classrooms with 27 Apple Mac computers, electronic facilities to enable 32 pupils to partake in fully interactive lessons, a new Music Technology room, a much improved recording room, offices and two instrumental stores.

In 2011 we were able to equip the Humanities and Religious Studies room with computers. We also gained funding from a Government scheme towards the refurbishment of two of our Science labs but we still have several labs in need of refurbishment and there will again be a shortfall in funds for this project.

Norman Hoare who retired in December 2012 always had a forward thinking approach to the school and was determined to offer the best facilities that he could to his pupils; this is something I know he wishes to see continued long into the future. We are pleased that he has agreed to be associated with our Legacy Programme and involved in promoting the important work of the Development Office.

The Development Office will miss the Headmaster’s knowledge of St George’s, as there is little he doesn’t know of its history. We all know and have seen his eagerness to improve the school and together we can make sure that the development of St George’s continues to offer the best.
