ST GEORGES SCHOOL, HARPENDEN
NOVEMBER 7TH 2011
STAFF BABIES USED IN TRAINING COURSE FOR PUPILS
2010-2011 SCHOOL’S BUMBER CROP OF BABIES
7 TEACHERS AND THEIR WIVES BOOST FUTURE SCHOOL INTAKE
Providing live practical babies for the School’s baby sitting course, six teachers and their partners turned up last week at the 1300 strong Sun Lane School with their recent offspring – a seventh was unable to attend.
Three female staff , two still on maternity leave and the wives of four pastoral
and curriculum leaders in the School volunteered their offspring for the baby sitting
course recently to allow the twenty 14 and 15 year olds on the two term course to
practise their skills on their newly born infants.
Mrs Sally Priestland who has organised the course for many years was thrilled to
get such a response.
“ We always have some babies brought in for the practical sessions but to have the six new members of the younger Georgian community come on one day was something pretty unique – another baby, Charlie Farmery’s infant child, the seventh baby born last academic year couldn’t come that afternoon.. The students practised their skills of feeding and nappy changing and got used to handling a real infant rather than the dummy infants that we often have on the Red Cross course. Over 20 student s in Y10 can follow this accredited course every year and we have a waiting list when it is offered.”
Headmaster Norman Hoare was delighted
“ Last academic year was an historic one for the school as we had seven babies born to members of staff at the school – three lady teachers on maternity leave and four of our male colleagues. It has been a lovely time for them and they meet socially to swap stories and tips. Our Founder Cecil Grant established St George’s as a family school and we are now seeing a potential contingent for entry in 10 year’s time !”

[I thought you might enjoy the parked baby prams/carriages….not a frequent sight at a secondary school – well not in Harpenden that is !]
