We aim to:
Develop Music as an integral part of the whole school community, both inside and outside the classroom. Currently over 500 of our students play an instrument or sing.
In The Classroom
Music is taught at all levels in the school. Each class in Years 7 and 9 has one Music period a week. In Year 8, music is taught in a carousel with drama and PSE. Music is a popular subject at GCSE and A Level with outstanding results.
Class work is mainly practical, based on the activities of listening to, performing and composing music.
The Department is housed in a suite of four rooms with 45 Mac computers for classroom work and has a recording studio.
Outside The Classroom
There are four main choirs: Junior Choir, Senior Choir, Chamber Choir and the Music Society Choir and with the exception of the Chamber Choir, all are open to singers of all abilities.
There are many instrumental groups:
- School Orchestra
- Wind Band
- Jazz Bands
- Rock Bands
- Chamber Ensembles
- Brass fanfare
- Grades1 – 4 ensemble
- Ukulele Orchestra
- Show band for joint productions with the drama department.
These choirs and instrumental groups perform throughout the school year at concerts, chapel services, shows and functions outside of school.
Every year the school runs the inter house music competition held at the Watford coliseum. A large number of our students (a third of the school) perform in House choirs and House orchestras. The 6th form students arrange all the music and conduct and rehearse the groups.
Our instrumental teaching is provided by Musicale, an independent music school situated on the school site.
St George’s School is affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music.
