Thank you for your interest in boarding at St George’s School, Harpenden.  We believe the opportunities that boarding can bring are many.

VAT Status

The Government has confirmed that state boarding fees will remain exempt from VAT, following the introduction of VAT at 20% on private school and boarding fees. This makes our fees highly competitive in comparison to the private sector.

Visit Us

Our open events for 2025 entry have now passed.  We do offer a tour of the school when you attend for interview, should this be required.  

If you are considering entry from September 2026 onwards, please join us for a tour of the school and of the boarding facilities at one of our open events.

How to Apply

If you are interested in places for the academic year 2025/2026, there is still an opportunity to join us in some year groups. Please contact us as spaces are limited, but the key dates are noted below.

For applications for 2026/2027 and beyond, please refer back to this page in the summer term when key dates will be updated.

Interviews

Once we have received an application, we will seek a reference from the current school and interview all applicants to ascertain their suitability to board.  As part of the interview, you will have the opportunity to tour the school and meet boarding students and staff.

Places are then offered according to the admissions code and in line with our Admissions Policy.  

Please note that we do not accept applications from students going into year 11 or year 13, unless there are exceptional circumstances.

Year 7

Dec 2024 UPDATE: The deadline for Year 7 applications has now passed.  Please contact us by email (see below) if you would like to enquire about the waiting list.

If you currently reside in the UK, you will need to apply BOTH to us AND to the Local Authority where you live.  Please use the link at the bottom of this page for the St George’s School application form.  Please also make an online application to the Local Authority where you live and select St George’s School (Boarding) as one of your ranked schools.  Please ensure that the schools you are applying for via your Local Authority are ranked in order of preference.

If you currently reside overseas, you will need to apply BOTH to us AND to Hertfordshire County Council.  Please use the link at the bottom of this page for the St George’s School application form.  Please also make an online application to the Hertfordshire County Council (Secondary Transfer) and select St George’s School (Boarding) as one of your ranked schools.  Please ensure that the schools you are applying for via HCC are ranked in order of preference.

Applications to join in Year 7 follow the same timeframe as the Local Authority Secondary Transfer process.  The process for applying to join us in September 2025 is as follows:

  • Monday 2nd September 2024 - Applications open for Year 7 entry 2025.
  • Friday 18th October 2024 - Closing Date for submitting the St George’s School application form to us.
  • Thursday 31st October 2024 - Closing Date for Secondary Transfer application to your Local Authority.
  • Friday 8th November 2024 - Boys Year 7 tours and interviews, held at St George’s 
  • Friday 15th November 2024 - Girls Year 7 tours and interviews, held at St George's
  • Friday 22nd November - Reserve date for Year 7 interviews
  • Friday 29th November 2024 - Deadline for changing school preferences with your local authority should you wish to.
  • Wednesday 18th December 2024 - We will let you know if your child is considered suitable to board.  Please note this is NOT a guaranteed offer of a place as there may be more applicants who are deemed suitable to board than we have places for.
  • Monday 3rd March 2025 - Formal offers are made.
  • Monday 17th March 2025 - offers must be accepted or declined by this date.

Years 8, 9 and 10

March 2025 UPDATE: Please email for availability, we have limited spaces in some year groups.

There is no deadline for applications into Years 8, 9, or 10, but the normal application window is during the autumn term and spring terms.  We normally make offers by February half term or by the Easter holidays.   Please complete the application form found below and send to us. If there are spaces available, arrangements will be made for an interview and tour of the school. If there are no places available at the time your application is received, you will be contacted and asked if you would like to be added to the waiting list.  Interviews will not be held until a place becomes available. 

Year 12

Dec 2024 UPDATE: The deadline for Year 12 applications has now passed.  Please contact us by email (see below) if you would like to enquire about the waiting list.

Applicants to become a boarder and study for A’Levels at St George’s School will need to complete an application form for boarding AND a separate options form for sixth form (to be made available at a later date).  Please note that this does not apply to current Year 11 boarding students already at the school.  

  • Friday November 29th 2024 - Closing Date for submitting an application for a boarding place in Year 12.
  • 17th December 2024- Interviews and Tours
  • 9th January 2025 - Interviews and Tours (continued)
  • 5th February 2025 - Interviews and Tours (continued)
  • 14th February 2025 - Boarding offers made (on or before this date)
  • April 2025 - Sixth form offers made including confirmation of subject choices.
