Geography
We would like you to complete work connected to the following AQA A Level Geography units:
- Coastal Systems and Landscapes
- Changing Places
These are the topics we will start with in September
You must bring your completed work to the first lesson in September.
Part 1
Physical Geography: Coastal Systems and Landscapes
Coastal Systems and Landscapes is the first physical geography unit you will study in September. It looks at coastal landscapes formed by the interaction of a range of processes. With over half of the world’s population living within 150km of the sea it is important for us to look at the current and
future management of coastal landscapes – a case study of a coastline within the UK and a
contrasting coastline beyond the UK will be a key part of the unit.
The following research will be an important part of the unit, so please take care over it. Produce one A4 side of research notes using the following headings:
- Predicted sea level rise
What is the predicted sea level rise? Make sure you note where you have sourced this data
from and try to include as much detail as possible e.g. predicted rise by 2100? Hint: IPCC.
- Causes of sea level rise
What are the causes of sea level rise? Give detail and clearly explain the causes in your own words. Source information you have read.
- UK areas affected by sea level rise
Using a blank map of the UK, mark on the current and potential future areas affected by sea level rise. Annotate on strategies which are currently being used to manage the challenges these communities face. How might these strategies change in the future?
- Case study of a stretch of coastline in the UK
For a stretch of coastline in the UK (e.g. the Holderness Coast), draw a sketch map of the stretch of coastline. Research areas on the map that are affected by erosion and areas affected by deposition; describe the landforms associated with these. Research management strategies adopted along the coastline to manage the risks of coastal erosion, or coastal flooding and annotate the details of this onto the sketch map. Note details of how this specific coastline will be impacted by sea level rise
Part 2
Human Geography: Changing Places
Changing Places is the first topic that we study in the Human Geography syllabus. It covers a broad range of issues including the role and function of place, how we perceive different places, the relationships between places and how places change over time. As part of this topic, we need to develop two detailed case studies – one of a place which is local (Harpenden) and the other of a dissimilar, more distant place (Brick Lane). This allows us to compare and contrast them. We would like you to conduct some research and compile a project about the town of Harpenden. This project will form an important basis for our case study and so take care over it. Make sure that your project is neat, accurate and well organised. Record all the sources that you use (website addresses) and add these to the end of your document. Your project needs to include the following:
- The Location of Harpenden
Construct hand drawn and annotated sketch maps to show the situation and land use of Harpenden.
- Map 1 needs to show situation which means where Harpenden is located in relation to its surrounding towns, roads, rail and physical features.
- Map 2 needs to show land use. You need to show the outline of the built-up area of Harpenden and the sub-divisions within Harpenden such as the town centre, other shopping areas, main roads, rail, localities such as Batford, West Common, Kinsbourne Green, Rothamsted etc. You could also include (and label) the common, agricultural land, leisure facilities, industrial units and any other land uses
Use an atlas. Google earth, and OS local maps. Each of your maps needs a key, title, frame, scale, direction and colour. Be as neat as possible. Each map should be at least half a side of A4. Make a note of your sources
- The function of Harpenden
Write a description of the function (or roles) that Harpenden has as a place. Think about why people live there? Why do they travel to Harpenden?
- The history of Harpenden
When did Harpenden come into existence? Why is it located where it is? Construct a time line, or devise a method to show how Harpenden has changed over time (from its origins to the present day).
- The economy of Harpenden
What is the economic base of Harpenden? What jobs do people do? What industry is there in Harpenden and its surrounding area? What sources of income does Harpenden have? Any government funding?
- The population of Harpenden
What is the total population of Harpenden? How has this grown over time? How has Harpenden changed demographically over time? This means how the population has changed. For this construct (or access) a graph to show the growth over census time periods.
- Qualitative evidence of change
Research and gather images (photos, paintings etc) and any articles to show how Harpenden has changed over time. Images should be labelled and/or annotated.
- Anything else?
Make a note of any other interesting facts or figures that you come across as part of your research.
